Triggered messages earn 4.6x the clicks of broadcasts

Every direct selling company sends broadcasts: the monthly promo, the new product launch, the incentive trip announcement. Fewer send messages triggered by what's happening in the back office. We looked at what that difference is worth.

THE DATA

We reviewed 15 direct selling companies on ZipLingo from 20 July to 18 October 2026: more than 6 million emails and texts. We split email into broadcasts (one send to a large list) and triggered messages (sent automatically when something happens in the back office, like an enrollment, a rank advancement or a cancelled autoship). One large company makes up most of the volume, so treat the averages as directional.

WHAT WE FOUND

  • Triggered email click rate: 2.29%. Broadcast: 0.50%. That's 4.6x the clicks.
  • Triggered email open rate: 45.6%. Broadcast: 34.9%.
  • 98% of broadcast email was delivered.

We lead with clicks because open rates are inflated by mail privacy features that pre-load images. Clicks are the cleaner signal, and the gap there is the biggest.

WHY TRIGGERED WINS

A triggered message arrives when it's relevant: the welcome right after enrollment, the congratulations the day a rank is earned, the save offer the moment an autoship is cancelled. A general marketing platform can't send these without a custom build, because it can't see rank, sponsor or autoship status. ZipLingo reads them live from the back office.

WHERE TO START

  1. New enrollment welcome series
  2. Rank advancement recognition
  3. Autoship cancellation win-back
  4. Declined card recovery
  5. Sponsor and upline alerts for new enrollments and orders
